When Thor first met Thanos, he invaded the Asgardian ship killing anyone he could find, he annihilated the Hulk with his bare hands, added to his collection of Infinity Stones, and killed both Loki and Heimdall. Thor knew exactly how dangerous he was, and swore revenge on him.

To kill the Mad Titan, Thor travelled across the galaxy to Nidavellir in order to forge a Thanos-killing weapon. He risked his life to kickstart the dying star’s forge, and created for himself with the help of Eitri and Groot a weapon stronger than Mjolnir and worthy of the name Stormbreaker.

So he had the means to kill Thanos, but why didn’t he use it properly? Far too late Thor showed how easy it would have been to separate Thanos’ head from his shoulders, but why didn’t he do it in the first place instead of risking him surviving a shot to the chest?

Even if Thor didn’t want to kill him immediately, to answer for his crimes in a way, he could have at least chopped off his gauntleted hand. Instead, this mistake allowed Thanos to snap his fingers, killing half of all living things, and drove the God of Thunder into a five year pit of alcohol and depression.
