10 Dumbest Moments In The Halloween Series
5. Any Scene Referencing The Thorn Curse (Halloween 6)
Attempting to attribute Michael Myers's murderous ways to an ancient druidic curse in the sixth movie was an idea so bad that it derailed the original Halloween series and forced the studio into an eventual retcon to wash away its bitter aftertaste.
Let's ignore the poor job Halloween 6's cinematic cut did explaining the Thorn Curse for a moment, and focus on the fact that providing an explanation for Michael's evil was missing the point of John Carpenter's original film. The most chilling thing about Halloween was that a young boy from idyllic American suburbia was capable of butchering his own sister for no apparent reason. In the blink of an eye, he had become evil incarnate, and the 'why' of the situation is what scares us.
The moment Halloween 6 threw ancient curses and druids into the mix, any sense of mystery Michael once commanded gave way to a lorryload of WTF.
Part of the problem was that Halloween 6's original cut was butchered by test audiences, forcing the studio to overhaul it and dilute the mystical themes. Unfortunately, this left behind dangling plot threads and arcs that went nowhere.
The movie was an unholy mess, but its most heinous crime was attempting to provide an explanation for Michael's evil, and a hokey one at that.
