10 Dumbest "Smart" Movies Ever Made

6. Looper

Ah, Looper: a movie that was almost entirely blase about its own time travel logic, sharing genetic material with Terminator Genisys by having a character simply refused to explain anything in detail because it wasn't possible. Straw diagrams were very much out of the question. It€™s all too complicated, too clever, to explain. Or so we're told. But really, Looper€™s use of time travel is a breeding ground for stupid errors and gaps in logic. The scene where Paul Dano€™s character is being dismembered, so his older self can be ambushed, for example. Surely, having fingers and limbs removed in his youth would change his entire life? Like the Butterfly Effect scene discussed earlier, such a big alteration would surely have ramifications. Call me a pedant, but the misunderstanding of causality throughout the movie makes little to no sense. If Joe sends himself back to stop the Rainmaker from existing, and then he does, surely the Rainmaker would never have killed Joe€™s wife, and Joe would never have gone back? He really should have tried out a few straw diagrams. We€™ve talked about the errors in this film in more detail here, if you want to read more about Looper€™s unique brand of dumbness.
