10 Dystopian Movie Futures You Really Wouldn't Want To Live In
8. Equilibrium
Well, on the one hand, it would be horrible to have your emotions stripped from you by the government, you wouldn't really know what you're missing, because you would have always been that way. The film Equilibrium features a society where the powers that be have determined that the best way to stave off war is by getting rid of anger and hatred via a mind-altering drug called Librium, the opiate of the masses. Unfortunately, the drug also takes away all the other positive emotions. And if, by some chance, you decide that you'd like to be able to be touched by beautiful music or swept away by a good book, then you're really in trouble. This "peaceful" society is actually a very strict police state with an armed force called the Tetragrammaton, who have permission to execute anyone committing a sense offense. Rescue the Mona Lisa? Own a fancy mirror? Have a pet puppy? Boom -- dead. It's a wee bit more draconian than we like our futuristic societies, and not even the ridiculously awesome gun kata martial arts could convince us to stick around.
