10 Early Predictions For 2018's Best Picture Oscar Nominees

7. The Big Sick

Why It Will Be Nominated: With an astonishing 98% Tomatometer and boasting a wholly original creative voice from writer-star Kumail Nanjiani while tackling an important subject in a clever, funny way, The Big Sick could end up as this year's "little indie movie that could."

The crowd-pleasing appeal and sharp script give the film a broad popularity that should endear it to the Academy just as well as it has everyone else.

Why It Might Not: Some voters may view the film as not "big" enough to be worthy of Academy attention, and the rather small number of nominations it's likely to receive elsewhere (most likely just Best Original Screenplay and Best Supporting Actress for Holly Hunter) could dissuade some from voting for it.
