Why It Will Be Nominated: Alexander Payne is nothing if not an Oscar darling, with the last three of his movies all receiving Best Picture nominations. With a curious, satirical premise and fantastic cast including Matt Damon, Kristen Wiig, Christoph Waltz, Laura Dern, Neil Patrick Harris, Margo Martindale and Jason Sudeikis, there are so many boxes being ticked for his latest effort.

Why It Might Not: It's possible that Payne might become unstuck considering that the premise, which involves Damon shrinking himself to escape his personal woes, will presumably require a lot of visual effects, something the director isn't particularly well-versed in.

Other than that, it's honestly hard to bank against this one making the cut.
