10 Easter Eggs You Didn't Notice In Marvel Phase 2

7. Allusion To Muspelheim For Thor 3? - Thor: The Dark World

One of the more important but totally fleeting easter eggs in Phase 2 occurs at the tail-end of Thor: The Dark World, as the portals to the Nine Realms begin to open up, and in this shot, as Malekith looks up to the sky, we can see a number of the portals wide open. The red, fiery portal is particularly important, as this is clearly a reference to the world of Muspelheim, a realm of fire ruled by the fierce Surtur, who leads an army of beasts known as the Fire Giants. Why is this important? It's been widely speculated online, as a result of vague comments made by Marvel higher-ups, that Surtur will be the antagonist of Thor 3, and as such, much of the movie will inevitably end up taking place in Muspelheim. We certainly hope so, anyway: with his tremendous size and power, he would be a considerable step up from the lame Malekith and finally give the God of Thunder a true foe worthy of his skills.
