10 Embarrassing Comic Book Movies That Ruined Beloved Characters
5. Mr. Freeze - Batman And Robin (1997)
In an ideal world, I'd put all four major villains from the two Joel Schumacher-directed Batman films in one entry, but seeing as I cannot, we'll have to settle for Mr. Freeze, who was arguably handed the worst deal in terms of doing justice to the character.
It's important to keep in mind how well Arnold Schwarzenegger was doing in the 1990s. After starring in Total Recall (1990), Terminator 2: Judgement Day (1991) and True Lies (1994), he was a hot ticket in Hollywood. This all ended abruptly in 1997.
Batman and Robin, as well as Schwarzenegger's take on Mr. Freeze, has been criticised and condemned to the point that there isn't much dead horse left to beat. With a performance that makes the 1966 television Mr. Freeze seem serious in comparison, one of the staples of Batman's rouges gallery has never before seemed so lame. At least Schwarzenegger seems happy with what he has to do, whilst the audience will be pondering whether or not the continued use of ice puns count as psychological torture.
If you take a shot every time Freeze makes an ice pun, you'll be dead of alcohol poisoning one hour into this excruciating two hour film.
