10 Embarrassing Comic Book Movies That Ruined Beloved Characters
3. Captain America - Captain America (1990)
This little obscure gem from the 1990s is on a whole new level of "so bad it's good", with its main entertainment quality revolving around laughing at how simply excruciatingly awful it is. With practically no budget, you have to at least the admire the determination of the filmmakers for making a film despite the very, very tumultuous production. A sane director would have given up.
The film completely ruins the story and character of Captain America, who in this adaptation is portrayed by Matt Salinger (son of famed author J.D. Salinger). The wooden acting from just about everybody is only the tip of the iceberg, as the dull and clueless script has no idea what to do with itself half the time, resulting in a plot that makes little to no logical sense.
One of the greatest aspects of Captain America that this film manages to butcher is the look of the character himself, with a ridiculous lycra suit that is easily put to shame by the Batman and Superman serials of the 1940s. Not only are the rubber ears affixed to the head blatantly obvious, but the whole thing doesn't even fit, making you wonder whether or not an original actor dropped out at the last minute, with no time to replace the costume. At the time, Captain America was not the Marvel A-lister he is now, and this film made sure of that.
At least Chris Evans was able to save the character in Captain America: The First Avenger (2011), or else he may still be on ice now.
