10 Emotional Movie Scenes That Will Make You Cry

9. "Superman" - The Iron Giant

It's easy to forget that on release The Iron Giant (based on the 1968 novel The Iron Man by Ted Hughes) was largely overlooked by the wider audience. The film is, for the most part, realised via traditional 2D cell animation, which was starting to look passe in the 1990s with the rise of Pixar and PDI Dreamworks.

Of course, in the years since the film's reputation has rightly grown, and the relationship that grows between young Hogarth Hughes (Eli Marienthal) and the mysterious fifty-foot metal man (Vin Diesel) has touched the heart of generations of viewers - most notably when the Iron Giant chooses to make the ultimate sacrifice, by stopping the missile that has been launched at their town.

As Diesel demonstrated once again with Guardians of the Galaxy's "we are Groot," his deep, dark voice can provoke a huge emotional response from the shortest, simplest of sentences: in this case, the Iron Giant's unforgettable last word, "Superman."

Young and old alike are left in floods of tears - although the final revelation that he survived the blast after all goes some way to softening the blow.

15 years later, Disney would pull off a similar trick with the death/return of Baymax in Big Hero 6.
