10 Emotional Movie Scenes That Will Make You Cry

8. Tomika Sings - School Of Rock

Yes, I'm serious. That family-friendly comedy in which Jack Black hijacks an elementary school class in order to make the schoolkids his band has at least one gut-wrenchingly emotional moment - and it's when Tomika (Maryam Hassan) steps up to the microphone in the climactic Battle of the Bands sequence.

It's the scene that the whole film has been building towards, so naturally it's a huge payoff for everyone, but it's a particularly significant moment for Tomika. This is the girl who, when Black's Dewey Finn first asks for singers, isn't even brave enough to put her hand up.

Later, despite proving that she more than has what it takes to sing, she's too nervous to go on stage at their audition.

Yet in that final song, she struts across the stage like she owns it, belts out an amazing load vocal with total confidence - and we cut to her parents, amazed, tears of pride in their eyes.

An incredible moment - and the fact that director Richard Linklater doesn't overemphasise it for excess schmaltz is a good thing.

Ben Bussey hasn't written a bio just yet, but if they had... it would appear here.
