10 Emotional Movie Scenes That Will Make You Cry
5. "I Do Believe In Fairies!" - Peter Pan
Given that it arrived in the shadow of The Lord of the Rings: The Return of the King, PJ Hogan's take on JM Barrie's classic children's story was somewhat overlooked on release in 2003, and even now doesn't seem to get the amount of love that it deserves.
This is a terrible shame, as it's almost certainly the best Peter Pan movie of them all, not least because it's arguably the only version to really acknowledge that Peter's eternal youth is as tragic as it is wondrous.
It isn't just that Peter (Jeremy Sumpter) doesn't want to grow up: he's actively afraid of it, all too aware of the personal and emotional burdens that adulthood will bring. This lends a painful edge to his relationship with Wendy (Rachel Hurd-Wood), as both children realise the first stirrings of romantic love between them are feelings of a more grown-up nature, which neither of them are ready for.
There's a powerful emotional edge to the entire movie, but it reaches a particular crescendo when Tinkerbell (Ludivine Sagnier) drinks poison to save Peter, prompting the distraught boy to chant, "I do believe in fairies! I do! I do!"
