There’s no denying that Ang Lee’s Life of Pi is visually stunning and quite deserving of its Academy Awards for Best Cinematography and Visual Effects but by the time the ending rolls around – in which we learn that Pi and his unlikely tiger sidekick Richard Parker’s fantastical journey of survival on the high seas is all a big lie – it’s a bit like a slap in the face.

There’s something definitely grating and slightly insulting to invest time in a film only for it to have an ‘it was all a dream’ ending. Though fans of the film have interpreted its ending as a metaphor for religious belief, and it does faithfully reflect the ending of the book on which it’s based, to conclude a movie like it’s Season 9 of Dallas is a bit lazy.
