The Tease

In the post-credits stinger for Paul Feig's 2016 all-female Ghostbusters reboot, the quartet are busy experimenting when Patty (Leslie Jones) hears supernatural activity in a recording and promptly asks her colleagues, "What's Zuul?"

To fans of the original Ghostbusters, Zuul is fondly remembered as the grotesque, dog-like gatekeeper of the shape-shifting demonic God Gozer, who possesses Sigourney Weaver's Dana Barrett in an attempt to complete a ritual allowing Gozer to rule Earth.

No matter what you thought of Feig's Ghostbusters, it was definitely intriguing to see Zuul teased for a prospective sequel, especially given how spectacular Zuul could theoretically look with the benefit of contemporary visual effects.

Why It Never Happened

Ghostbusters scored broadly positive (and rather generously so) reviews, but sank like a stone at the box office - owing to both pre-release controversy over its all-female angle and an absurdly exorbitant $144 million budget.

The planned sequels were swiftly cancelled, and at present a second, smaller-scale reboot is currently in production for a summer 2020 release, with Jason Reitman - son of the original movie's director, Ivan - both writing and directing.

So, it's possible we'll still get to see Zuul on-screen as soon as next summer if Reitman wants to pay homage to his father's original, but it's also equally possible he'll want to forge his own path and do something completely different.
