7. The Sinister Six - The Amazing Spider-Man 2

The Tease

Numerous nods were made to Spider-Man's iconic supervillain stable throughout Marc Webb's divisive sequel, including appearances by traditional team members Green Goblin (Dane DeHaan) and Rhino (Paul Giamatti), while the suits of Vulture and Doc Ock were also briefly visible within an Oscorp lab.

And if that's not enough, a secret end credits Easter egg further hinted at not only these beloved baddies, but also Kraven the Hunter and Mysterio.

Why It Never Happened

Despite the clear implication that the Sinister Six would serve as the antagonists of The Amazing Spider-Man 3, this film's mixed reviews and disappointing box office performance caused Sony to put the reboot series on ice.

Within just two years, Spider-Man made his MCU debut in Captain America: Civil War, confirming that any specific designs Sony had on a Spidey vs. Sinister Six film were deader than the dodo.

At present it does seem that the MCU is slowly building towards the emergence of their own interpretation of the Sinister Six, possibly in their third Spider-Man movie expected to release in two or three years' time.

But of course, there are no guarantees, and even if it does happen, it'll be almost a decade after Sony first teased it, and in an entirely different continuity no less.
