10 Erotic Art House Movies

10. Valerie and Her Week of Wonders (1970)

21.03.2013valerie 2 Valerie and Her Week of Wonders is a surreal Czechoslovakian film with a dream like atmosphere and many bizarre goings on. Valerie, a 13 year old girl, is sleeping on a gazebo when a thief comes along and steals her earrings. He is hideous in appearance but puts a weasel mask on his head. She follows him into the crowd and loses him. At a wedding she spies the man again and points him out to granny. It turns out he is vampirising her granny and the whole town from the dank dark basement of Valerie's house. A lecherous priest has designs on Valerie and her 'aunt' moves in to try and get her to the darkside. Her aunt turns out to be her vampirised granny coming to get Valerie into her clutches. Luckily a dashing hero is present to rescue Valerie and defeat the vampires. As the townsfolk celebrate, Valerie goes to bed. The beauty of the actress playing Valerie is spellbinding as well as the whole film itself. It conveys eroticism through a series of symbols like lesbians playing in a waterfall. It relies on symbols and surrealism to tell the story as there is not much narrative cohesion. But it is beautiful to look at. With the vampirism, there is a good dose of horror in the film so that should please fans of eroti-horror. A potent mix of straight sex, lesbianism, incest, vampirism and other sorts of deviancy, Valerie and Her Week of Wonders is a visual feast to behold.

My first film watched was Carrie aged 2 on my dad's knee. Educated at The University of St Andrews and Trinity College Dublin. Fan of Arthouse, Exploitation, Horror, Euro Trash, Giallo, New French Extremism. Weaned at the bosom of a Russ Meyer starlet. The bleaker, artier or sleazier the better!
