5. The Thomas Crown Affair
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=mIfu-mWUHKI The Thomas Crown Affair was a fairly successful Norman Jewison film released in 1968 (and remade over 3o years later with Pierce Brosnan and Renee Russo), at the crossroads of the end of the Studio System and the birth of New Hollywood. The film featured many non-traditional film techniques (such as extensive use of split-screens) and starred counter-culture icons Steve McQueen and Faye Dunaway. But Jewison showed restraint in one very key aspect of the film: the sexual energy between the two lead characters. In a scene near the middle of the film, Faye Dunaway's Vicki Anderson goes with Thomas Crown (Steve McQueen) back to his home. She is there to snoop, and plays Crown like a fiddle, in classic Femme Fatale style. After noticing a chess board, Vicki challenges Thomas to a round. What ensues could quite possibly completely rectify the reputation chess has as a game for virginal nerds. The sexual tension in the air is indescribable, and the characters' intentions couldn't be more clear - as Vicki is about to win, Thomas pulls her in for a kiss and suggests they go play at "something else". Sexiest Moment: When Faye Dunaway rubs her fingers slowly up and down the Bishop piece as she thinks about her next move. Subtle, Norman Jewison. Very subtle.
