In Search of a Midnight Kiss is the mumblecore take on the New Years Eve movie and completely shames other movies in which single people are looking for a hook up at midnight. It also has one of the strangest premises that could only happen in contemporary society. Wilson (Scoot McNairy) is broke, miserable and has recently relocated to Los Angeles. Its New Year's and one of the worst years of his life is about to end. He wants nothing more than to hide out in his apartment and let the night slip into the next year. But then his friend comes over, only to catch him in a very awkward position and convinces him to write a Craigslist ad, looking for someone to spend the evening with. A short while later, a woman named Vivian (Sara Simmonds) contacts him and tells him she is interviewing candidates. She gives him until 6:00 to wow her because she is trying to find the love of her life that night, based off guys she met on Craigslist. If Wilson doesn't impress her quickly, shes on to another candidate. The nearly improbable love story is shot in black and white and takes place over the course of one night as Wilson and Vivian begin to grow closer and closer. It is one of the more blatantly sweet films on the list, but it isn't cheesy. It just has quirky characters that are endearing and there is nothing wrong with hoping they hook up. This movie is about the delicate dance of meeting someone special and it doesn't miss a step.
