10 Essential Mumblecore Films

7. Bellflower (2011)

One of the darkest films in the mumblecore category, Bellflower bills itself as a €œpre- apocalyptic€ movie. Woodrow (Evan Glodell) and Aidan (Tyler Dawson), are 20-somethings who like to party and build weapons like flame throwers. They hope that the world would come to an end so that their gang, Mother Medusa, can begin their rule. Things get complicated in Woodrow€™s life when he starts dating the free spirited Milly (Jessie Wiseman). At first, things are going well, but slowly start spinning out of control. Milly even warns him that she is no good for him, but Woodrow continues to date her - although it's clear he€™s a fairly unstable person himself. The movie completely embraces the naturalistic style of mumblecore to show that at times, the end of love is the complete destruction of someone€™s world. That sometimes, an apocalypse is just losing that person you love.
