6. Drinking Buddies (2013)
Joe Swanberg is one of the most prolific writers and directors working in the genre, having directed 16 feature length films since 2005, along with having over 40 acting credits to his name. Out of his impressive filmography, Drinking Buddies is one of his best films. While using professional actors, Swanberg keeps the movie low-key and simple. Kate (Olivia Wilde) and Luke (Jake Johnson) work together in a brewery; as a result of working together and drinking a bunch, the two continuously flirt. While it may have been harmless at first, things get complicated in the week leading up to a couples weekend where Kate and her boyfriend (Ron Livingston) and Luke and his girlfriend (Anna Kendrick) are all supposed to hang out. Like many other mumblecore movies, alcohol and drinking play a major part in the lives of the characters and influence the plot greatly. By having them work at a brewery it shows how alcohol is such a pivotal thing in the lives of young people because of the paths it sets. It also features an immensely likable cast. If Swanberg keeps writing and directing films of this caliber, he'll soon be the go-to director for smart and funny romantic comedies.
