10 Even More Movies With Ridiculously Subtle Foreshadowing

5. Chuck Can't Handle His Gun - Shutter Island

The Godfather Foreshadowing
Paramount Pictures

Shutter Island is completely and utterly mind-boggling in the very best possible way. It's one thing to have an unreliable narrator, but to have a narrator who doesn't know himself that he's unreliable? This played a huge part in the truly shocking reveal at the end of the film.

Though Leonardo DiCaprio's Teddy Daniels arrived on Ashecliffe as a US Marshall looking into the mystery of a missing patient with his partner Chuck (Mark Ruffalo) at his side, it was revealed at the end that very little of what the audience had seen was real. Daniels was actually Andrew Laeddis, a patient of the mental institution, and was being put through a drastic experiment to try and make a breakthrough in his treatments.

Part of the façade was that one of the doctors on the island, Dr. Sheehan, played the part of Chuck, Daniels' partner. When he entered the room at the end to be introduced as the "absent" Dr. Sheehan, it was a bombshell.

However, it was alluded to at the very beginning. When Daniels and Chuck were asked to hand over their firearms upon entering the hospital, the latter struggled to get his out of the holster. Of course, this was because he was not a US Marshall and had little to no experience handling a gun. It's a huge red flag looking back once you know the truth, but at the time nothing at all was thought about it.
