10 Everyday Things Horror Movies Have Made Terrifying
7. Religion
For a lot of people religion is a source of comfort and security, helping them feel safe when the world seems out of their control. But many religions also have a litany of demons, the source of all the world's evils and horrifying enough to scare the hell out of anyone. Tangles with these demonic forces have been the story behind some of the most frightening movies of all time, like The Exorcist, which is even scarier to an audience of believers.
But to non-believers religion can look like a system of brainwashed worshipers who abandon their individuality as they partake in disturbing traditions. Finding oneself surrounded and governed by an unhinged cult with a charismatic leader is setting bound to produce some scares, regardless of if the beliefs end up being true like in the Eldritch horrors of Lovecraft, or merely tradition like in the British classic The Wicker Man or A24's boundary pushing hit, Midsommar.
Regardless of if one believes in something more being out there or not, religions use in horror cinema is effective enough to have the most devout Catholics clutching that rosary with a bit more intensity, or enough to make even casual atheists steer extra clear of their nearest church.
