5. The Cheese Grater - Evil Dead Rise

The Super Mario Bros Movie Bowser
Warner Bros.

Evil Dead Rise proved to be yet another solid entry into the shockingly consistent horror franchise, though over the course of its first hour it just lacked a little of the creatively gnarly imagery that made the original Sam Raimi trilogy such a damn hoot.

But then the cheese grater scene happened.

Roughly an hour into the movie, the demonically possessed Bridget (Gabrielle Echols) attacks her aunt Beth (Lily Sullivan) with a cheese grater of all things, slamming it onto the back of her leg and tearing it downward, ripping off a big ol' hunk of flesh in the process.

It's perhaps the single most stomach-churning image in the movie, and perfectly encapsulates its mission to take the Evil Dead series' gross-out formula and transport it from a remote cabin into the more everyday location of somebody's city apartment, where household items become deadly weapons.

Even before the film's release, the cheese grater scene had become something of a meme online, with Warner Bros. even handing out cheese graters at preview screenings, because they clearly knew the gory gold they had on their hands.

It's at this moment that Evil Dead Rise cemented itself as a fittingly wince-inducing installment into the franchise.
