10 EXACT Moments That Derailed Huge Movies
8. Antebellum - Cutting To The Present Day
This one is a crucial reminder of the importance of good editing.
Antebellum, though ultimately unsuccessful, did boast an intriguing premise: a modern-day African-American woman named Veronica (Janelle Monae) finds herself on a slave plantation in the Deep South. How has this happened? Unfortunately, the movie gave it away long before the so-called reveal.
It starts off with Veronica in the plantation and then cuts to her in the present day, showing Veronica's normal life as a sociologist. This over-extended present-day segment concludes with Veronica being kidnapped, good-as revealing that she's still in the present day but has been kidnapped by some people who are re-enacting the past, which indeed proves to be the case. She's in a Civil War re-enactment park, where several other African-Americans have been imprisoned.
With its excessive cruelty and sluggish pacing, Antebellum was in trouble from the off, but the mystery of where Veronica was could've kept viewers more engaged, so giving the game away so early was a fatal mistake. Antebellum should've started with Veronica in the modern day or cross-cut between the two timelines in order to preserve the mystery, which was the one thing giving the film the slight entertainment value that it had.
