10 EXACT Moments That Derailed Huge Movies
4. Spider-Man 3 - Emo Peter Parker
Some have taken to the internet to defend Spider-Man 3 in more recent years, describing it as a misunderstood gem. Is that warranted? Not in the slightest, and nostalgia is probably motivating such statements. Spider-Man 3 is even worse than you remember.
Many have highlighted the overabundance of villains as the key flaw, but that's not necessarily the real reason this film is such a narrative failure. What really sinks it is how it wastes a great idea: Peter Parker (Tobey Maguire), previously a lovable and wholesome hero, turning dark.
This could've been so powerful, and what does Spider-Man 3 do? It turns it all into a joke. The main thing Peter Parker does when he goes dark is snap at a few people, dance down the street, and act like a cringey emo. With this scene, the movie proved beyond a reasonable doubt that it wasn't interested in telling a weighty story at all.
Tobey Maguire deserves props for his funny, committed performance here, and it inspired some funny memes, but within the movie itself, emo Peter Parker is an unforgivable, picture-ruining mistake. Maybe it even killed the series outright? It's hard to imagine many being able to regard this particular Spidey franchise as a legitimate thing after something so stupid actually got left in.
It's also part of a weird trend. This, Fantastic Four: Rise of the Silver Surfer, Bloodshot, Morbius... what is it with superhero movies and goofy dance scenes?
