10 EXACT Moments That Derailed Huge Movies
2. Django Unchained - King Kills Calvin
Django Unchained is the most acclaimed movie on this list by some distance, and though its acclaim has always felt over-generous, there are some great things in it, especially its amazing acting. Having said this, even those who loved the film have often agreed that it goes off the rails by the end, as it dissolves into a ridiculous shoot-em-up kill-fest. Sure, the action scenes in this part of the feature are well-directed, but the event that sets them off feels unearned, and as such, it's harder to appreciate them.
Once assassin King Schultz (Christoph Waltz) and his protégée Django (Jamie Foxx) buy Django's wife Broomhilda (Kerry Washington) out of slavery, they're all set to go. However, her former owner, the sadistic Calvin Candie (Leonardo DiCaprio) smugly orders Schultz to shake his hand to seal the deal and Schultz, sickened by Candie's cruelty, shoots him dead. And so, it all goes to hell.
This moment is just ridiculous. Why would a brilliant and seasoned assassin lose control in such a way, thus jeopardizing his friend and an innocent woman he was trying to rescue? After this scene, which takes out two great characters within 30 seconds (Schultz is shot dead seconds later), Django Unchained dissolves into a juvenile kill-fest which also features a beyond-cringey cameo from Quentin Tarantino himself as an Australian slave dealer. It was all downhill from here.
