The death of a newborn baby has become the main thing most people remember from Darren Aronofsky's mother! You can understand why as well: the scene is brutal, traumatising, and something you don't expect to see a blockbuster horror to show in gory detail.

However, part of what makes it so effective is that the audience, on some level, knows it's going to happen.

Throughout mother! a poet known only as Him quickly gains a cult-like following that overwhelms the home he occupies with his pregnant wife, the titular mother. As he invites more and more unruly guests into the house, things start getting out of hand. They become so obsessed with Him that they destroy everything the mother holds dear, up to the point where people are being executed in the living room.

After giving birth though, the father pleads with his wife that the people just want to see his baby and appreciate it. Knowing better, mother says no, locks herself in a room, and begs Him to let her have this one thing.

Unfortunately for her, she's had a pretty traumatising day and nods off to sleep. When she wakes up, her baby has been taken from her arms, and the audience knows there's only one thing that means.
