A lot of horror movies end on a final twist death. You know the beats: just when you think the villain has been defeated it turns out that, surprise, they absolutely have not and one of the main characters is about to face their wrath.

This exact scenario plays out in the American remake of The Ring. At the end, Rachel and Noah think they've avoided the certain death that comes with watching the home video of terrifying ghost child Samara by freeing her spirit.

But it turns out that actually just made her stronger, and the reason Rachel didn't die once her seven days were up was because she copied the tape and passed the curse on to someone else.

Because Noah was sitting on his arse during this he didn't do the same thing. Consequently, once Rachel is informed that Samara hasn't been defeated, you know Noah is a goner.

It doesn't matter that she rushes to try and save him in time - the audience is well aware that Samara is coming, and she ain't leaving without another tally on her kill list.
