10 Exact Moments We Knew Movie Characters Were Doomed To Die

2. Howard Wins Big - Uncut Gems

Howard is one of the most frustrating (but best) movie protagonists in years. He's a walking nightmare of a man, a self-destructive force that makes the lives of everyone around him worse through his constant bad decisions and even worse luck. Over the course of Uncut Gems we watch him dig his own grave, as he falls deeper into debt and is accosted by a couple of heavies, led by the brilliantly deadpan Phil.

A series of escalating threats make it clear that there's no love or respect between these two men, and Howard's constant slippery snake nature and failure to just do the right thing and settle his debts clearly makes this more than business for Phil.

Consequently, when the heavies come to collect one final time, and Howard locks them in his store while he awaits the results of a basketball game that could net him over $1million, tensions reach boiling point. It's another ridiculous gamble on Howard's part but miraculously, it pays off this time. He'll have their money and can prove locking them in there was the right idea.

In a film like Uncut Gems though, there's no such thing as a happy ending. Consequently, as soon as the bet pays off, and the money is seconds away from being delivered, you know Howard is doomed.

The armed men locked in his doorway - who already hate his guts - aren't going to let their business get in the way of taking out Howard and taking the money for themselves.
