There's a bunch of important things that happen across Goodfellas' decades-spanning gangster story, but none are more important than the death of Batts. The movie opens with Henry, Tommy and Jimmy driving out to bury the then-unknown charactrer, who's bleeding out in the trunk of their car.

The flick flashes back in time after this opening, but we eventually get context for the scene. It turns out Batts was a made man recently out of prison, and Tommy - being the fiery hot-head that he is - jumped to extreme measures following feeling disrespected by him. With the help of Jimmy, he kills Batts in Henry's bar and buries his body outside of town.

It looks as though they've done a pretty good job cleaning it up, but even if you've never seen a gangster movie before, you know that the murder of a made enforcer is not something swept under the rug. Tommy's already a loose cannon and a liability but this is the final straw, a death sentence that will come eventually.

Whether he ends up floating in a pond, hit with a truck or buried alive, at this point you know the wise guy is a goner.

The movie throws you off a bit when it reveals Tommy is being taken in to be made by the bosses, however it's all a ruse to get him alone and to punish him for his deeds.
