The death of Han Solo helped cement Kylo Ren as a genuine threat and ushered in the new era of Star Wars. It's an incredible scene, with Harrison Ford and Adam Driver both bringing their A-games, and it's not at all hampered by the fact fans knew exactly where it was going.

That's because The Force Awakens is particularly heavy handed with its parallels to A New Hope - to the point where many fans just straight-up called it a remake - and that's no clearer than in this death scene. The characters have been switched, but it's intentionally framed to mimic Obi Wan's death from that first Star Wars flick.

As soon as Han meets his son on that walkway - with all of the new cast watching on - you know it can't end any other way. This is Han's hail Mary, and with nowhere to go (literally, they're standing over a void), anything other than turning his son fully back to the Light will result in his death.

With the set up, knowing this was the first part of a trilogy and the fact that the colours actually give away Kylo's intention before he acts on it, fans knew Han was doomed to die - but it didn't make it any less heartbreaking.
