10 Extremely Controversial Films That Upset The Censors

8. Cannibal Ferox (1981)

cannibal fox I sincerely apologise for including two Italian Cannibal movies in this list, but they do give us a good idea of how the BBFC can get their knickers twisted about certain movies. Cannibal Ferox - a standard Westerners-go-to-The-Amazon-and-get-ensnared-in-native-cannibalism adventure has really made the censors hot under their collars over the years. Released uncut in 1982, Cannibal Ferox inexorably made its way onto the DPP's banned list in July 1983. It would take nearly two decades - 2001 - for the film to be put before the BBFC for classification again. It was passed as an 18 certificate after around 12 minutes of pre-cuts and cuts. This included: numerous real life animal slaying, Mike eviscerating a native person's eyeball, scenes of Pat and Mike tormenting a young native girl about her virginity and using a knife across her breasts, Joe being disemboweled and having his guts as cannibal chow, Mike having his hand cut off, Mike's castration and the natives eating his severed willy, flashbacks to Mike's ex-girlfriend being kicked in the head and the imfamous impaling on hooks breasts scene. All these cuts served to do was render Cannibal Ferox an impotent shell of a horror movie. I have seen more traumatic episodes of The Magic Roundabout. I know that the BBFC has a duty to serve and protect, but there was absolutely no point in re-releasing Cannibal Ferox in 2001 with its balls stripped off. It merely made it a confusing and tame jungle adventure movie. You are best to seek out an uncensored Region 1 version.

My first film watched was Carrie aged 2 on my dad's knee. Educated at The University of St Andrews and Trinity College Dublin. Fan of Arthouse, Exploitation, Horror, Euro Trash, Giallo, New French Extremism. Weaned at the bosom of a Russ Meyer starlet. The bleaker, artier or sleazier the better!
