10 Facts You Probably Didn't Know About Hogwarts

The school itself is definitely a sight to behold, with acres of land and castle towers filling the area, leading to classrooms and hidden passageways galore. On site, the school holds its own Quidditch sports grounds with enough seats for the entire set of both staff and students to spectate.

On the opposite side lies the the Forbidden Forest, bordering the edge of the grounds and holds the most dark and dangerous of creatures. In the Goblet of Fire, we also were given a glimpse to further elements such as the Hogwarts Lake (or Black Lake), spanning for miles.

In the books, Hogwarts is said to be situated in the Scotland highlands somewhere undisclosed (to keep the muggles out of course). In the third movie, someone mentions that Dufftown is near but, it's anyone's guess to where it really lies.

Much of the inspiration for the school itself came from the University of Oxford, the second oldest university in operation to date, which looks just as prestigious as the fictional school for witches and wizards. More English universities were used for the overall design inspiration when coming to make the school come to life for the movies, including Durham and Cambridge.
