10 Facts You Probably Didn't Know About Hogwarts
2. School Motto
School mottos in many schools tend to translate from Latin to English to discuss morals or attitudes, being around for centuries. Hogwarts' motto is a little different, after Rowling confirmed that she didn't want it to be the same as many other schools, but rather a warning or advice for any students present.
Hogwarts motto is Draco Dormiens Nunquam Tillandus' which translates as 'Never Tickle a Sleeping Dragon' - sound advice for anyone thinking they wanted to get close to one of the large fire breathing creatures, let alone give it a tickle.
On the coat of arms of the school, the motto sits below the emblem, a mixture of the four creatures and colours representing each house and founding member circling the letter 'H'. It has become one of the most recognisable emblems and can usually be found on most Harry Potter merchandise today, but now you'll know what it means.
The school also has its own song, with no standard tune or beat, letting the students sing in whatever pitch and rhythm they want. The lyrics are within the books - and in one of the deleted scenes of The Goblet of Fire, the students sing their anthem.
