10 Facts You Probably Didn't Know About Hogwarts

1. Staircases

Magical enchantments surround the school grounds, including the jinxed Whomping Willow that violently thrashes and in some cases majorly injures anyone or anything that gets too close for comfort.

Inside the school, the staircases fill each hallway, leading up to dormitories and classrooms alike instead of lifts or students using their broomsticks inside to fly up there. There are one hundred and forty-two staircases in total within the castle, which nobody would want to walk up in one go.

The stairs within Hogwarts are yet again enchanted, moving seemingly at random times and to random places. This causes some issues, especially for the first years who have yet to experience or handle the moving steps. It has been said that students have fallen through the gaps at times when they begin to move, having to be rescued later on.

Surrounding the towers of stairs are moving paintings, usually of magic folk who once went to Hogwarts are in some way connected to the school. The enchantments of the paintings mean that they too can move on their own from within their frame and even talk to the students as they run up hundreds of steps to reach their next lesson in time.
