10 Fake-Out Movie Deaths Nobody Believed

5. Central Intelligence - Phil

The Dark Night Jim Gordon Gary Oldman
Warner Bros.

In this buddy-cop action-comedy, CIA agent Bob (Dwayne Johnson) and his school colleague Calvin (Kevin Hart) are on the hunt for a mysterious criminal known only as the Black Badger, who has already murdered Bob's previous partner, Phil Stanton (Aaron Paul).

Bob has been framed for Phil's murder and he and Calvin have to go on the run from the CIA in order to catch the real criminal. Once Bob heads to a criminal deal posing as the Black Badger, the real Black Badger arrives... and it's Phil, who'd faked his death. But of course it was!

Central Intelligence is overall rock-solid, but this was a terrible plot twist. Since the Black Badger was set up as an unidentified villain, that immediately implied they would be a known character connected to the protagonists; Phil definitely seemed like the most obvious example.

After all, why would a film bring in a great actor like Aaron Paul for a single flashback scene? Additionally, similarly to Jenny in The Happytime Murders, we never saw a body.
