8. The Goonies (1985)
Beneath this fantastical family adventure lies a message so overwhelming that I practically gag on it. With unabashed subversion, Steven Spielberg and Richard Donner have injected their socio-political opinions into this film. And what is it they are trying to push? Freak tolerance. An affection for obesities, nerds and Corey Feldman. Would society be more advanced if we left those abnormalities screeching in the desert, like the Spartans before us? Donner and Spielberg didnt think so. They thought that those things should join the adventure and even get a little treasure, too. Do you think you were immune to their machinations? Heres the test: if I were to shout, Hey you guuuuuuuys, would you smile with fond remembrance, or would you flee in terror from the chilling call of such a deformed monster?
