10 Family Movies With Mind-Blowingly Questionable Morals
7. Toy Story As a whole I would defend the moral integrity of the Toy Story franchise. I think the themes of friendship and loyalty are commendable. But the first instalment definitely has a few question marks. Initially, Woody shows an alarming dislike for outsiders. Maybe this is to be expected - after all, Woody is a cowboy, a tribe not renowned for their liberal politics. Luckily Woody experiences his own personal enlightenment and sees sense, but it is a sticky few minutes. After we've assured ourself that Woody isn't a racist, we meet Sid. Now Sid is a troubled child. He is known for the maltreatment of his toys and generally being a bad egg. The problem here is that the younger viewer sees the toys Sid 'tortures' as humans, or at least as sentient beings with the ability to feel pain. To these children, it appears as though Sid is torturing people. But to Sid, he is just pulling apart toys. For all we know he may be a pacifist who takes out his pent-up anger on bits of plastic. Essentially, I think Sid gets a bad edit. Poor guy.
