10 Famous Actors Who Turned Down Roles In Marvel Movies
4. Matthew McConaughey - Ego The Living Planet
Alright, alright, alright. Somewhere in the multiverse there is a version of Guardians of The Galaxy Vol. 2 where Joseph Gordon-Levitt and Matthew McConaughey face off in the father/son finale.
McConaughey said no to playing Star Lord's dad, opting instead to portray Stephen King's perennial baddie Randall Flagg in The Dark Tower film adaptation. The Dark Tower movie was a mess, leaving fans of the book series quite underwhelmed.
McConaughey told Playboy "I like Guardians of the Galaxy, but what I saw was 'It's successful, and now we've got room to make a colorful part for another big-name actor.' I'd feel like an amendment."
We now know that Ego was, in fact, meant to be the main villain of the piece, not just an amendment. Ego was also written with more depth than the aforementioned Randall Flagg/Man in Black. McConaughey was more interested in being involved in a franchise at the beginning, rather than jumping in at the sequel. Based on his interviews at the time, he believed there would be more Dark Tower movies. The failure of Dark Tower all but killed any hope of sequels.
If McConaughey has an aspirations of joining the MCU, he'd best hurry. He keeps getting older, but the heroes stay the same age.
