10 Famous Actors Who Turned Down Roles In Marvel Movies

Well, he certainly is strange so Joaquin Phoenix was already halfway there. Marvel has been showing interest in Joaquin for awhile now. After he turned down the role of Bruce Banner/Hulk, Phoenix was approached to portray the Master of the Mystic Arts.

Again he turned them down, stating, “I’ve flirted with several of those films, having meetings and getting close, but ultimately it never felt like they’d really be fulfilling.” In the lead up to the production of the first Doctor Strange film, Phoenix seemed all but set to tackle Strange. At one point, he was described as being in "final negotiations" with the studio. While Phoenix points no fingers regarding the deal, it fell through in the end.

Phoenix told website Little White Lies, "I think they (Marvel) make some great, fun movies. There’s nothing wrong… I’m not a f***ing, like, cinephile. I’m not a snob and I’m totally fine with… I enjoy those movies sometimes, and I think they keep the f***ing industry going in some ways, so I don’t have a problem with it at all. I think that everybody was, is… I’m trying to figure out how to say this most diplomatically, okay… I think everybody was really happy with how things turned out. All parties were satisfied."
