10 Famous Movie Characters Who Were Almost Given Awful Names

1. Luke Skywalker Was Almost Called "Mace Windy" (And Then "Luke Starkiller") - Star Wars

Star-Wars-Luke-Skywalker-Tatooine Luke Skywalker holds the title for "most iconic name in a science-fiction fantasy movie ever," because - c'mon - there's arguably nobody on Earth who hasn't heard that name - every kid who grew up watching Star Wars most probably ran around the garden at one point, shouting: "I'm Luke Skywalker! Bzzzz! Bzzzz!" Though the name as about as famous as they come, I've always found it weird - though not bad - that Lucas opted for "Luke." Was it because it sort of sounds like "Lucas," and its creator secretly wanted to fly around in an X-Wing and flirt with his sister ("in spaaacee")? Anyway, back before Star Wars with even a thing, George Lucas conjured up a two-page synopsis for something called "The Journals of the Whills," which is nowhere near as catchy as what he'd eventually used, but contained a story about a guy named "Mace Windy," who is trained as a "padaawaan" by a "Jedi-Bendu." I know, right? What the hell was Lucas smoking? He eventually came out of his daze and abandoned most of these ideas, honing them in for what would become Star Wars. The name "Mace Windy" (terrible as it is) was later revamped for Samuel L. Jackson's Jedi master character Mace Windu. In the first draft of the Star Wars script, though, Luke still wasn't Skywalker; he was "Luke Starkiller," which was soon changed 'cause it sounded too evil. Like this list?
