A pair of shoes that have been around since 1939 probably won't be in the best state in terms of smell, but then again, when the footwear in question was worn by Judy Garland in The Wizard Of Oz, there really isn't anything to complain about.

All the way back in 2000, Dorothy's famous red ruby slippers - only size four-and-a-half, considering Garland's slight frame - were purchased for the modest sum of $660,000 (£515,000) by a man named David Elkouby, a private collector who ran his own memorabilia shop in Hollywood.

At the time, the slippers were one of only four surviving pairs (from a total of eight) to make it from the production of the film. Naturally, there were some signs of usage, but the shoes were in pretty fantastic condition all things considered.

Danny has been with WhatCulture for almost nine years, and is currently Doctor Who Editor and WhoCulture Channel Manager, overseeing all of WhatCulture's Whoniverse coverage. He has been writing and video editing for 10+ years, and first got a taste for content creation after making his own Doctor Who trailers and uploading them to YouTube (they're admittedly a bit rusty by today's standards). If you need someone to recite every Doctor Who episode in order or to tell you about the making of 1988's Remembrance of the Daleks, Danny is the person to ask.
