For all of the brilliant beats and exciting new characters brought into play over the course of the follow-up to the hugely successful first Pirates of the Caribbean entry, Curse of the Black Pearl, the absence of Geoffrey Rush's Captain Hector Barbossa was still very much felt over the course of much of the runtime.

That was until the unmistakable and assumed dead presence made a jaw-dropping return in Dead Man's Chest's closing stages, leaving just about everyone in cinemas the world over wondering what in the hell they just saw. But they weren't the only ones as it was later revealed that the cast themselves were legitimately caught off-guard by Rush's re-emergence on the day, thanks to the director pulling off a rather delicious swerve.

Supposedly, according to the movie's DVD commentary, the cast on set were informed that it would be Zoe Saldana's Anamaria wandering down the steps as the quest to rescue Jack Sparrow began to unfold. However, Gore Verbinski actually had the brilliant ace of Rush up his sleeve, leading to the very much genuine response of shock from those cast members watching on.
