10 Famous Movies That Got Away With Half-Assed Plots
6. Frozen Doesn't Bother To Explain The Origin Of Elsa's Powers
Some are sure to cite this particular entry as somewhat pedantic, given that it concerns an animated kids' film, but think about it for a second: Frozen, Disney's latest triumph, is - generally speaking - brilliant. At once, the picture manages to embrace established Disney traditions whilst also subverting them in ways that feel fresh. Great. But what everyone seems to have missed (likely because the musical numbers are so catchy) is the fact that the major plot point is just "there" from the very beginning with no real explanation. And we're talking, of course, about the fact that Elsa (you know her as the one who sings "Let It Go") possesses incredible cryokinetic powers from birth for absolutely no reason. Or, at least, reasons that are never explained at any point in the movie. Her younger sister, Anna, has nothing of the sort, and when Elsa's parents visit a bunch of trolls to find out why she might have inherited such awesome abilities, they fail to explain why or how it could've happened. Granted, this is set in a fictional world where magic exists, so who cares, right? Well... It does seem a little half-assed to imbue a character with such incredible powers from birth just because it serves the plot. Couldn't we have had even a minor explanation as to why? It seems like Disney might've tried to come up with a reason, but opted to leave it as ambiguous at the last minute. You want us to be quiet so you can listen to "Let It Go" again? Well, all right, then.
