10 Famous Movies That Got Away With Half-Assed Plots

7. Godzilla's Motives Are All Over The Place

The recent Godzilla was considered to be something of a triumph of modern blockbuster fare. And save for a cast of absolutely dire cardboard characters, it was a vast improvement on that godawful Godzilla movie from 1998 starring Matthew Broderick (who ever thought that was a good idea?). Still, despite being something of a visual effects treat and featuring some epic battle sequences, the plot was decisively half-assed. Yes, even though Godzilla acted like its plot had been thought out extensively, the whole thing was really vague as hell. So although the whole picture is crammed to the brim with exposition, mostly we're being told the same stuff over and over again - basically the origins of the titular creature or the events surrounding his appearance or whatever. The biggest problem arises with Godzilla himself, whose motives are so scattered that it's difficult to know what to think about him. Sometimes he attacks humans; sometimes he attacks the enemies. He just sort of does whatever the plot needs him to do, but there's no sense that it's been thought out to the point where somebody could offer up an explanation. And of course, we're too distracted by the badass moments to really bother ourselves with any of it, despite the fact that Godzilla - as a character - is never justified as a prescene. It doesn't help, either, that the whole backstory that the writers offer up for the lizard king here is confusing as hell and unnecessarily convoluted.
