10 Famous People You May Have Forgotten Were Oscar Winners

7. Prince

Prince is another artist who has received so many accolades that it's easy to forget that he's an Oscar winner. The man has released 35 studio albums, sold over 100 million records, and is a winner of 7 Grammys. When you look up all of his accomplishments as an artist, his Oscar starts to feel like something of an afterthought. Prince won his Oscar in 1985 for his album Purple Rain which, of course, was the soundtrack to the movie of the same name. What's peculiar about his win is that it was for Best Original Song Score, a category that has not been in effect for almost 30 years now. In fact, Prince was the last person to win in the category. According to Wikipedia, the category is still in the Academy rulebooks and is now called Best Original Musical. In order to qualify for this award, the musical must contain at least five original songs written by one writer, or a team of writers, and the songs must further the storyline of the film. The category can only be used if "the field of eligible submissions is determined to be of sufficient quantity and quality to justify award competition." Since there are never more than one or two musicals released per year, it's unlikely we'll see another person win in this category again.
