10 Fan Theories For Upcoming Movies (That We Hope Are True)

3. The MCU's Phase 4 Slate Is Setting Up Dark Avengers

Now that the MCU's next few entries have been unveiled, we know what to expect from the franchise until 2021. But one thing that isn't clear is whether or not Phase 4 - and the next couple of Phases after that - will have some sort of overarching plot or villain.

Phases One to Three dealt with Thanos and the Infinity Stones, so it's highly likely that we'll get something like that with the upcoming movies and TV shows: a tease here and there, some post-credits clues, some actual plot points, all leading up to an event like Infinity War and Endgame. But what?

With Fox's suite of Marvel characters entering the fray, the possibilities are now near-limitless, but one of the best theories is that Phase 4 will lay the groundwork for the Dark Avengers.

Essentially, the concept of the Dark Avengers is to have supervillains masquerading as famous heroes (for example, in the comics, the first Dark Avengers team had Venom posing as Spider-Man), and the idea behind the theory is that some of the MCU's upcoming movies will introduce a particular "dark mirror" of their respective Avenger.

The Black Widow movie will feature a character called Yelena Belova, an assassin with a skillset similar to Natasha Romanoff's. Belova could easily end the movie as a bad guy, taking the Black Widow slot on the Dark Avengers team. Other ideas include Taskmaster (also featured in Black Widow) mirroring Hawkeye, Justin Hammer mimicking Iron Man, and Abomination acting as the Hulk.

This would be an awesome way to tie the new MCU (with characters like Belova) in with the old (Hammer and Abomination), and would be a refreshingly different threat from the universe-destroying plan of Thanos in the last few Phases.
