Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness will, as the name implies, explore the multiverse. There's no telling just where the film will take us, since the whole appeal of the multiverse is the ability to go basically anywhere, with no restrictions.

With that in mind then, fan circles have been going crazy trying to come up with the wackiest, most exciting places that Doctor Strange could visit on his inter-dimensional travels: everything from the Marvel Zombies universe to some sort of Deadpool tie-in has been suggested, but another nifty idea - and one that has a slight link to the MCU - is that the Sam Raimi Spider-Man universe will make a cameo

But how? Well, in 2004's Spider-Man 2, there's a mention of Doctor Strange: while trying to come up with a nickname for the newly-villainous Otto Octavius, the Strange moniker is suggested, but Jameson says no, stating that it's "taken".

But this doesn't seem to make sense. We never see Doctor Strange in the Raimi universe, and he's never mentioned outside this short scene, but the fact that his name is famous enough to put Jameson off using it must mean that Strange is a notable figure in this world, right?

In an attempt to fill in some of these gaps, a theorist over on Reddit has a cool explanation. In Multiverse of Madness, Strange will pay a visit to the Raimi-verse, make himself known, and then depart. This is why Jameson states that the name is "taken", and why it's even suggested in the first place: because New York has encountered someone called Doctor Strange before.
