10 Fan Theories That Actually Improve Classic Horror Films
4. It's All About An Eating Disorder - Drag Me To Hell
A popular fan theory for Drag Me to Hell is that Christine doesn't have a curse on her at all; she's actually starving herself to death and hallucinating everything. It's established that Christine was once overweight when a photo is shown of her as a kid standing in front of a sign that reads "SWINE QUEEN." It's also made clear that she's desperately trying to escape who she once was.
The film has a lot of food imagery, such as the scene where Christine spits up cake because she sees an eye in it. Is that what's really happening, or is just her mind finding an excuse not to eat? Many times Christine is attacked by the ghost she's in the kitchen, and one night she has a dream of being vomited on by the old woman. This could simply be what Christine sees while she's in the bathroom purging. The old woman also has no teeth, and she rips out Christine's hair several times; losing teeth and hair are both common side effects of bulimia.
In general, the movie has a huge oral fixation: Christine has a fly enter her mouth, and at one point the old woman shoves her hand down Christine's throat. It's significant enough that it seems even if Christine isn't imagining everything, Raimi at least intended these things as subtext.
