We don’t have the kind of degrees in parapsychology and physics it takes to understand how the Ghostbusters’ proton packs work but we do know that crossing their streams can have devastating consequences for their users. In the words of their co-creator Dr Egon Spengler, “Try to imagine all life as you know it stopping instantaneously and every molecule in your body exploding at the speed of light.”

That doesn’t sound like an event the average mortal being could survive to us, which lends at least a smidgeon of credibility to this particular fan theory – that the Ghostbusters guys died when they crossed their proton streams while battling evil demon Gozer during the film’s finale.

But what about Ghostbusters II, we hear you cry? Well, spawning from this theory is the idea that the 1989 sequel is actually set in purgatory and sees the gang forced to relive their lives. This also offers a handy explanation as to why the sequel was basically a rehash of the original Ghostbusters movie only with slightly different plot details.

Because that wasn’t down to lazy writing or anything…
